Prop Firm Daily Loss Limit Calculator — Track Your Remaining Room

Daily loss limits fail more prop firm accounts than any other single rule — often on a single bad morning. Enter your starting day balance and daily loss limit percentage to instantly see your maximum allowed loss in dollars, how much room has already been used, and what percentage of the daily limit remains. Check this before you place your first trade of the day.

Why Use the Daily Loss Limit Calculator?

A single unplanned trade can consume your entire daily loss limit in minutes on a volatile news day. Checking your remaining daily room before every trade — especially after earlier losses — is what separates funded traders who pass from those who fail on a technicality after weeks of profitable trading.

Daily Loss Limit ($) = Starting Day Balance × Daily Loss % | Remaining Room = Limit − Losses So Far

TopStep $50K account, 4% daily limit ($2,000). Already lost $800 today. Remaining room = $2,000 − $800 = $1,200. At your 0.5% risk per trade ($250), you have exactly 4 more trades available today (4 × $250 = $1,000, leaving $200 buffer). One more bad trade at normal sizing keeps you safe; an oversized trade in frustration could breach the limit.

How to Use the Daily Loss Limit Calculator — Step by Step

  1. 1

    Enter starting day balance

Input your account balance at the start of today's trading session.

  2. 2

    Set daily loss limit percentage

Enter the daily loss % from your prop firm rules. FTMO = 5%. TopStep = varies. Apex = 3% for most accounts.

  3. 3

    Enter current losses

Input how much you have already lost today (leave at 0 if you have not traded yet).

  4. 4

    Read your remaining room

The calculator shows total daily limit in dollars, how much you have used, how much is left, and a risk meter showing how close you are to the limit.

What Your Daily Loss Limit Calculator Results Mean

Total Daily Limit ($)

The maximum dollar loss your account can absorb today before trading is locked. Calculated from the balance at the start of the trading day.

Remaining Room

How many dollars you can still lose today before breaching the limit. This is your actual trading budget for the rest of the day — risk no more than 50% of this remaining room across your remaining trades.

Daily Limit Usage %

What percentage of your daily limit has already been consumed. Above 50% used is a warning to reduce position sizes. Above 75% used: consider stopping for the day.

Daily Loss Limit Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is the FTMO daily loss limit?

FTMO daily loss limit is 5% of the initial account balance. For a $100K account = $5,000 per day. For a $50K account = $2,500. The daily loss is calculated on the balance at the start of each trading day, not on open positions — so unrealized losses count.

Q.Does the daily loss limit reset every day?

Yes — the daily loss limit resets at the start of each new trading day. For FTMO, the reset is at midnight CET. For TopStep, it resets at 5:00 PM CT. Always check your firm's specific reset time. Positions held overnight may have their floating losses count against the next day's limit.

Q.What happens if I breach the daily loss limit?

Breaching the daily loss limit immediately fails the challenge or funded account — there is no grace period or warning in most firms. Some brokers auto-close all positions at the moment the limit is hit. Prevention: set a hard stop in your trading platform at 80% of the daily limit and refuse to trade past it.

Q.Should I risk the full daily loss limit each day?

Never. Professional prop traders treat the daily loss limit as a hard ceiling, not a target. Most experienced funded traders stop trading after losing 40–60% of their daily limit. If you lose $2,000 on a $5,000 daily limit day, stop. Come back tomorrow fresh — protecting the account is more important than revenge trading.

Q.How do I avoid hitting the daily loss limit?

Set a personal daily loss limit at 50% of the firm rule. If FTMO allows $5,000 daily loss on $100K, stop trading at $2,500 loss. Use a position size calculator so no single trade can lose more than 25% of your daily limit. Take a mandatory break after 2 consecutive losses.
